Mainland China can mean a huge city start, a coastal winter marathon or a race on the Great Wall that makes your normal hill session look modest. For runners based in Hong Kong, the nearest choice and the most memorable choice may be very different races.

This guide selects ten upcoming editions in our catalogue for late 2026 and 2027. It is a travel shortlist, not a census of every major race in China. Entry information checked on 31 October 2026. An announced date is not an open application window.

Shanghai Marathon 6 December 2026 30,000 marathon places for 2026 A large city occasion from the Bund
Guangzhou Marathon 20 December 2026 30,000 marathon places for 2026 A Pearl River city weekend
Shenzhen Marathon 6 December 2026 30,000 marathon places for 2026 A nearby full-marathon goal
Chongqing International Marathon 10 January 2027 26,000 marathon places for 2027 A riverside race and a distinctive city break
Danzhou Marathon 20 December 2026 11,000 places: 3,000 full and 8,000 half A Hainan alternative with a published entry window
Great Wall Marathon 15 May 2027 Organizer’s race page gives a 2,500 maximum across distances An adventure-race holiday
Wuxi Marathon 21 March 2027, AIMS-listed 2027 capacity not verified A spring race to watch
Lanzhou Marathon 23 May 2027, AIMS-listed 2027 capacity not verified from a current organizer rulebook A Yellow River city trip
Dalian International Marathon 25 April 2027, AIMS-listed 2027 capacity not verified A different coastal city for spring

The first seven are ordered by the published capacities shown, not actual turnout. The final three are additional trip ideas with dates listed by AIMS; their full 2027 entry rules still need checking. Previous editions’ sizes have not been passed off as new quotas.

Shanghai: a big occasion, with an early application calendar

Shanghai’s 2026 marathon expands to 30,000 places and starts at the Bund’s Golden Bull Square. A separate 15,000-place health run on the previous day is a different event, not an extra 15,000 marathon runners.

The main marathon’s application window ended on 29 May 2026, with draw results in June and payment due in July. That early calendar is the practical lesson: waiting until autumn to investigate can be too late. Read our Shanghai Marathon edition page and the Shanghai government’s registration announcement.

Guangzhou: the Pearl River and a proper marathon goal

Guangzhou is an appealing city-weekend choice for Hong Kong runners. The 2026 full marathon runs from Tianhe Sports Centre to Haixinsha, with a 30,000-place field and a route along both sides of the Pearl River.

Registration ended on 11 September. The official notice requires recent race experience: one marathon or two half marathons within the preceding 24 months, with online results excluded. Do not describe it as an unrestricted first-marathon entry. See our Guangzhou Marathon details and Sports Bureau announcement.

Shenzhen: near Hong Kong, still a race to plan properly

Shenzhen reduces the distance between home and a major race trip. Its 2026 programme has a full marathon only, with 30,000 places, starting at the Civic Centre and finishing at Bao’an’s waterfront square.

The published entry window ended on 28 September. Proximity does not remove the need to confirm acceptance, collect your bib and reach the start on time. Read our Shenzhen Marathon page and the city’s official event notice.

Xiamen: begin the year by the sea

Xiamen’s 10 January 2027 marathon has a published 35,000-place quota. Its course starts and finishes at the International Convention and Exhibition Centre, with island-ring roads and waterfront sections giving the race its identity.

Use the 2027 regulations, not last year’s application schedule. The current edition’s general application window has ended; a waitlist process for existing applicants is not a fresh public-entry opening. Compare our Xiamen Marathon details with the official 2027 regulations.

Chongqing: a riverside race, a city with its own personality

Chongqing pairs a marathon with a destination worth more than a quick hotel stay. The 2027 race uses Nanbin and Babin roads and offers 26,000 marathon places. Think of the city break and the course as separate pleasures; a city’s hilly reputation does not by itself describe the race’s elevation profile.

Applications ended on 13 September. The rules require one marathon or two half marathons in the stated qualifying period at Chinese Athletics Association-certified events. Check whether your results qualify before assuming an overseas certificate is sufficient.

See our Chongqing Marathon page, competition rules and entry requirements.

Danzhou: a Hainan option to investigate now

Danzhou is worth a look if you want a winter island trip and a choice between full and half distances. The 20 December programme has 3,000 marathon and 8,000 half-marathon places, starting and finishing at Yangpu’s coastal cultural square.

Its published entry window runs to 12 November 2026, or earlier if full, and acceptance is subject to review. Prior race-experience evidence is required for both distances. Pack collection is in person on 18–19 December with the original registration ID; no proxy collection is allowed. Those details matter for a visitor’s arrival day.

Read our Danzhou Marathon details and official entry-platform regulations.

Great Wall Marathon: train for the adventure, price the whole trip

This is the selection for runners who want a story as much as a time. The organizer describes thousands of steps and a route on the Great Wall at Huangyaguan, with full, half and 8.5K choices. The race page’s 2,500 maximum covers the event, not just the marathon.

International runners enter through a tour package. A regional package explicitly includes Hong Kong residents, with residency evidence required. Crucially, the displayed accommodation-package starting price is not an all-in race price: race entry is separately charged. Compare the complete package, entry, transfers and any extras before budgeting.

See our Great Wall Marathon 2027 page, race information, registration routes and regional-package terms.

Wuxi: a spring date to keep on the radar

If you want a spring race rather than another December target, Wuxi’s AIMS listing gives 21 March 2027. The organizer’s accessible English site still presents its 2026 edition, so do not copy its old quota, prices or entry dates into a 2027 booking plan.

Use our Wuxi Marathon page and the AIMS listing as your starting point. Wait for the organizer’s edition-specific rules before treating this as available entry.

Lanzhou: a different city on the running map

Lanzhou is an option if you want a race trip beyond the usual east-coast cities. AIMS lists 23 May 2027, making it a later spring target in this selection. Leave time to enjoy the destination rather than making the whole visit a start-line transfer.

The date alone does not confirm registration or overseas eligibility. Follow our Lanzhou Marathon details and the official AIMS listing for the organizer link and subsequent edition announcements.

Dalian: another coastal option for spring

Dalian’s 25 April 2027 AIMS date offers a useful alternative if January does not fit your training. It is a different city and season from Xiamen or Danzhou, which is reason enough to compare the full travel plan rather than choose on a race name alone.

Current-edition capacity and entry availability were not verified. Start with our Dalian International Marathon page and AIMS race information; confirm the final route and rules with the organizer before booking.

The China race-trip checklist that matters

Choose the correct ID and entry category for your circumstances; “overseas resident” and “foreign national” are not interchangeable in every rulebook. Check whether your prior races meet the event’s own certification and date requirements. Save final acceptance, not just an application receipt.

Then settle collection, payment and transport. In-person ID checks can determine when you must arrive. A travel package can have separate race-entry charges. Two races sharing a date are alternatives, not a double-booking opportunity: Shanghai and Shenzhen coincide on 6 December, Guangzhou and Danzhou on 20 December, Xiamen and Chongqing on 10 January.

For currently listed application options, filter our China race calendar by entry status. For a shorter journey, compare our Macau race guide.
